Infinity

is a bench that explores the possibilities of bamboo strip construction. The process of designing and constructing the bench was done by Tom Huang and myself. The idea came after building The Comfort Girls. I wanted to see if the strip making process was structural enough to be implemented into a seating project. The Infinity bench was originally designed to be used as public seating in the lobby of a museum or gallery.

These are my original computer model concepts. I was looking for a shape that would really puch the boundaries of what was possible with the material.

The cross sections are generated by the computer modeling program Rhino. They are then traced, cut out of plywood, and placed into the jig. This ensures the end result will be exactly as seen in the computer model.

Each strip has a custom milled profile. This allows for more gluing surface and better rotation around tight curves.

The outside shell is complete.

The inside tube is made with the same process.

We use a vacuum forming machine and the bench itself as a mold to create endcaps with a perfect fit. The endcaps are made out of acrylic that is later painted on the inside.

The final bench is finished with a sprayed on lacquer.
