Design II Chairs

are a set of chairs that allow the user to determine a comfortable position. They were designed with both formal and informal postures in mind. The user can sit comfortably upright or reclined. They can be combined in many different ways to accommodate any seating situation.

I started with some sketches of different types of shapes. The goal was to find one that allowed for multiple arrangements. The challenge was to refine the shape over and over until it fit together.

I used a combination of foam and cardboard to mock up the general shape of the chair.

Making a seat is difficult for several reasons. The relationship between the object and the ground, its surroundings, and the person sitting in it are all relevant factors. It has to be comfortable, durable, and visually pleasing. This chair was even more difficult because it had to function a certain way relative to other seating units as well.

The final design consists of a plywood core, high-density foam, and is upholstered in a micro-suade.
